Really this is two books: a purported comprehensive(fifty years!!) history of comedy and a magnum opus of David's "amazing' life interfacing with the comedians. If this had just been a Steinberg biography it would probably still be sitting on some editors desk waiting for publication. So what we have is how much "ME,me,me me", do you include and how much of the actual comedians stories you tell. Unfortunately this turns into a comedic minefield with no explosions. it recalls Hedda Hopper, Louella Parsons, and Walter Winchell. Some of it seems hopelessly sycophantic especially in the passages relating to Jerry Seinfeld and poor me, i did not think the second coming had not yet occurred. Really the title of the book overpromises and that at best it is way too comprehensive If you're 20, you probably don't know who David Steinberg is. If you grew up in the seventies, eighties, or nineties, you know he was one of the hardest working stand-ups in the golden age of stand-up when appearing on Johnny Carson made your career. This book is full of stories about comedians he's worked with, admired, or hung out with over the last 50 years of his career as he's become a respected writer and director.I was pretty excited when I came across a sentence early in the book which used the words "'70s" and "different from." Proper punctuation ( or lack of unnecessary punctuation) and good grammar are rare and beautiful things. Kudos to Steinberg and his editor.
